BLUES & SOUL "On Of The Best Singles Of The Year" 2025 voted by Terry Jones
A. EDWIN STARR – Real Humdinger
B. EDWIN STARR feat. THE FANTASTIC FOUR – Scott's On Swingers
"Real Humdinger" by J.J. Barnes is one of the greatest records to emerge from Detroit –Soul City #1– in the 1960s. What Soul fans at the time did not know was that J.J’s fellow Ric-Tic artist Edwin Starr had actually recorded the iconic masterpiece before J.J! The track’s producer and co-writer, Al Kent, told the story to West Grand's Neil Rushton in Detroit in 2018.
Motown had of course acquired Golden World/Ric-Tic so in 2025 the West Grand team sent an enquiry (plea?) to Universal Music to see if they could locate Edwin’s tape in the Motown vaults. To begin with they couldn’t but Motown authority Paul Nixon urged them to keep on searching and lo and behold the precious recording was located wrongly filed in a tape box of Don Davis productions. Our good fortune continued when a previously unreleased take of the radio promotion recording "Scott’s On Swingers" (S.O.S), by Edwin Starr, was also uncovered. We are eternally grateful to Universal Music for allowing us to present these two precious discoveries to the world as an exclusive West Grand single.
West Grand 45s showcasing the very best of Motown’s rare soul legacy. Straight from the mighty Motown vaults.
